Hear from our Healing Paws community about adopting adult dogs…
We all love puppies – they are so cute and playful but we want to give a shout out to the, often overlooked, adult dogs … so we have invited some of our Healing Paws parents to share their experience of adopting older dogs.
Vicki tells us about adopting Bella as an adult dog…
“We adopted Bella as an adult dog from Sue, and we realised that it’s such a shame that the older dogs are often overlooked in favour of the pups.
The adults have so much love to give and can be easier on your finances, patience and time than the pups!
The older dogs seem to instantly know that this fantastic new person has come to their rescue and changed their life forever. Older dogs are ready to love and are incredibly appreciative of the love you’re bringing into their life. This was certainly the case with Bella. She also had an incredibly calm temperament when she arrived. Don’t get me wrong, she can be reactive on occasion, but older dogs are less energetic and have better manners in my experience. Of course, an added bonus is that you know what they’re going to look like fully grown (so no surprises!) and also have a much better idea of their personality.
Sue matched Bella perfectly to our family and we’re so grateful to have been given the opportunity to adopt her.”

It’s true with a puppy you, understandably, may have more financial outlay … you are committed to getting them spayed when the time is right, all their follow-up vaccinations, and, of course, puppies are more to have the odd upset stomach as their immune systems develop, just like children!
Meet Ruby
Carol tells us about adopting a young mum dog Ruby at 18 months old …
“My Ruby was found with her pups. I fell in love with her photo. I don’t think I could have coped with a puppy. She was probably about 18 months old when I adopted her, the most placid, good tempered dog ever and so loyal. She has accepted another 2 year old rescue into the household with no problem. I feel so very fortunate to have her.”

Meet Jeannie, a special girl known to the Healing Paws community
Yvonne, adopted Jeannie at 7… Jeannie has a special place in the hearts of many of the Healing Paws community, because she was an amazing foster mum to several litters of abandoned puppies.
Yvonne says “I also adopted an older dog from Sue, Jeannie, she was nearly 7 at the time. I fell in love with her, she is absolutely adorable, she’s playful, loving and the kindest, sweetest girl I have ever had, I am so grateful to Sue and the team xx.”

Yes, puppies are super cute, funny and playful but they are also typically higher maintenance and higher cost than a mature dog. Don’t overlook the adult dogs – they have so much love to give. To see all of our dogs available for adoption go to Dogs for Adoption
